And Sew On And Sew Forth: Making Alterations For Your Big Day

by Mia Bolaris-Forget (Staff Writer)

I recently took my father-in-law’s pants to be hemmed and that cost about $40, and getting my mother-in-law's button loops sewn back on her coat (I was pressed for time) cost $20 for two. That’s why I usually opt to do “simple” tailoring myself. But, when it comes to your wedding dress, and trust us, it WILL need at least some alterations, it’s best to trust it to a seasoned pro.

While your local tailor may be a skilled “seamstress”, he or she may not have expertise in dealing with all the intricate details of a wedding dress. And, we’re not just talking any wedding dress, we’re talking YOUR wedding dress, and it’s not likely you’ll want to leave even the most minute detail up to chance. Wedding dress shops and salons offer professional alterations done by skilled professionals specifically trained in this type of attire. Trusting your dress to someone else may be cheaper up front, but may wind up costing you more in the long run, if you’re not happy with the results.
